My Best Friends Birthday (1987) - Q.Tarantino

My Best Friend's Birthday (1987) is an unfinished black and white independent film by Craig Hamann and Quentin Tarantino, while they were working at the now shuttered Video Archives in Manhattan Beach, California. The project started in 1984, when Hamann wrote a short 30-40 page script about a young man who continually tries to do something nice for his friend's birthday, only to have his efforts backfire. Tarantino became attached to the project as co-writer and director, and he and Hamann expanded the short script into an 80 page script. On an estimated budget of $5,000, they shot the film on 16mm over the course of the next four years. Hamann and Tarantino starred in the film, along with several video store and acting class buddies, and worked on the crew, which included fellow Video Archives employees Rand Vossler and Roger Avary. The film is the most overtly comic that Tarantino has made.The film was completed, but the final reel was destroyed in a lab fire that broke out during editing. The surviving part of the film was shown in part to a small crowd in early 1987.Later became the basis for True Romance (1993)Actor Allen Garfield was teaching Quentin Tarantino acting at the time, and that is how he also became involved in the project. Filmed over three years, from 1984-1987.

David Bowie - The Image & The Looking Glass Murders

From 1967, we have the brilliantly bizarre The Image - a freaky short movie co-starring Michael Byrne about an artist whose painting comes to life and haunts him. This short movie seems to have been a heavy influence on the superb David Mallet-directed promo video for Bowie's 1979 classic (and one of my personal favourites) "Look Back In Anger". The Image is a superb, atmospheric, little arty horror-thriller.

From 1970, we have the superb, surreal pantomime The Looking Glass Murders starring Bowie's mime mentor (and, allegedly, ex-lover) Lindsay Kemp. Adapted from Kemp and Bowie's original stage play Pierrot In Turquoise, Bowie co-stars as "Cloud" and sings a few songs including "When I Live My Dream" and a catchy little ditty called "Threepenny Pierrot" which Bowie fanatics (such as myself!) will know that the tune was also used for the early Bowie classic "London Bye Ta-Ta".

Mister No

Mister No is an Italian comic book, first published in Italy in 1975 by Sergio Bonelli Editore. Mister No was created by writer Sergio Bonelli under the pseudonym of Guido Nolitta, and by artist Gallieno Ferri. The last number (379), published in December 2006, was set in 1969. Mister No is a former soldier who served under the United States Army and his real name is Jerry Drake. During the Second World War he moves to Manaus, in the middle of the brazilian Amazon Forest to escape from the horrors of the war. Half hero, half anti-hero, he fights for his own peace and tranquility where he hopes to gain in these wild territories. He works as an aeroplane pilot and touristic guide, flying his Piper. His best friend is the german Otto Kruger, nicknamed Esse-Esse (S-S) because of his past as officer of the Nazi German Army. Jerry, like Esse-Esse, is a lazy man who likes hanging around in Paulo Adolfo's cantina, drinking cachaça and flirting with girls, and gets involved in dangerous troubles against his will. A gang of forty motorcyclists, the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club, gate-crash a legitimate motorcycle race. They are eventually thrown out, but one of the gang steals the second prize trophy and gives it to their leader, Johnny. The gang then ride into Wrightsville, where they race up and down the main street before piling into Bleekers - the local bar. The owner of the bar is happy to let the bikers spend their money, so does not support the sheriff's attempt to address any disturbances. Stuck in town following an accident to a Black Rebel, Johnny falls for the sheriff's daughter and tries to impress her with the trophy. When a rival gang, The Beetles, ride into town, trouble is just around the corner.

Eva "Tundi" Horvath (or Orwache) was born in 1965 in Budapest, Hungary. She was a stunning blonde of mind-boggling proportions and was yet another discovery of the great Russ Meyer. Russ Meyer is rumoured to have shot extensive footage of Tundi for his never-released epic, The Breast of Russ Meyer. However, her career was relatively short. Meyer did shoot her in 1987 for the French magazine, Newlook, (and her layouts appeared in a few other magazines), including Oui and the March 1990 issue of Fling, but she did little after that.

From 1981, here we have the nutty, weird and wonderful sci-fi children's comedy Gosti iz galaksije aka Visitors From The Galaxy. Starring Zarko Potocnjak, Lucie Zulová and Ksenia Prohaska (she appeared in Bugsy as Marlene Dietrich), amongst others. Directed by Dusan Vukotic - the first Croatian (and also the first foreigner) to win an Oscar. This movie is cool for many reasons - it features humanoid kids who shoot blue beams out of their eyes, a Metroplolis-style alien babe who has powers beyond reason and, best of all, a Triffid-type plant-creature-monster-thing that has some very perverted-looking ways of attacking people...

The plot: Robert is a science fiction writer, who realizes that he can make his thoughts material. Because of that, a group of aliens arrives to Earth. Their leader is Andra, who shows affection for Robert, which does not please his girlfriend, Biba. A monster, Mumu, has arrived together with the visitors from space.This is what kids' films should be like: inventive, dark, daft, crazy and not just made for entertaining the kids. Even in a completely foreign language (there are no subtitles), I find movies like this far more enjoyable and entertaining than sickly over-hyped, patronising garbage like Finding Nemo.
